Apple has confirmed that it will be launching the next generation of its two major software platforms, Mac OS X and iOS, on Monday – and promises a long-rumoured bonus, too.

The company will kick off its World Wide Developer Conference on Monday with a keynote speech from chief executive Steve Jobs, who will be rolling out the red carpet for the entrance of iOS 5 – the company’s next-generation mobile platform.

Rumoured features include Android-style homescreen widgets, improved voice control technology, and a complete overhaul to the notification system used in the company’s iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad lines.

Rumoured features include Android-style homescreen widgets, improved voice control technology, and a complete overhaul to the notification system used in the company’s iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad lines.

The mobile OS will be joined by the latest release of Mac OS X, codenamed ‘Lion.’ Designed to bring some of the better features across to the desktop from iOS, Lion includes the Mac App Store, an iPhone-inspired Launchpad, the ability to launch native applications in full-screen mode, and gesture control on a multi-touch trackpad or mouse.

While it was generally known that the WWDC keynote would cover these two new topics, there’s a third that may comes a surprise: a product called iCloud, which may well refer to the long-awaited streaming music service Apple is believed to be working on.

Described in the somewhat terse press release as “Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering,” it’s not yet known if iCloud is the music streaming service or a more business-oriented offering.

Absent from the press release is any mention of an iPhone 5 or even the rumoured iPhone 4S redesign – although that’s not to say Apple won’t spring such a thing on the gathered crowd as a surprise at the end of the speech.

Samsung Galaxy S II i9100 Android Gingerbread smartphone ready to rock the UK. We do know that the Samsung Galaxy S II i9100 has already been announced some t?me ago, and here we have news that said smartphone will be arriving on UK shores in the near future, perhaps as soon as next month.

Of course, this news comes about thanks to British retailer Clove, who cla?ms Samsung will start shipping the new Galaxy in mid or late March. Needless to say, when you are faced with such a new handset, it is a no brainer that you will have to fork out top dollar for it – in this case, we are looking at the 16GB version going for £510 (€596) without VAT, or for £612 (€715) with VAT.

Of course, if you decide to rock on to the 32GB version, that is going to burn another relatively large hole in your pocket at £590 (€690) without VAT, and £708 (€828) with.

Expect these prices to change though the closer it gets to the release date, and there is a pretty good chance that you will pay less eventually if you decide for it to arrive without having to place a pre-order. There is always a price for everything, and in this case, the early adopter method w?ll definitely cost you and then some.

Technology continues to increase in terms of hardware and design at a blinding pace. One of the biggest selling points of many of today’s device is how thin and portable they are. Apple once claimed the ‘World’s Thinnest Smartphone’ title with the iPhone 4 but was quickly overrun by competitors. Now, it seems that NEC is looking to get down on the fun with the NEC Medias.

This smartphone is what they are claiming to be the thinnest clocking in at just 7.7mm. Operating system wise we’re looking at Android ‘Froyo’ 2.2 and on the hardware from the device is to feature a 4-inch LCD display with 854 x 480 resolution, 800MHz processor, 5.1 megapixel camera, digital TV tuner and e-wallet function. Seeing how the digital TV tuner and e-wallet functionality would be useless here in the states, we’re going to assume that it won’t be making its way out of Japan anytime soon.

Seeing how this is technically a rumor we’d say not to get your hopes up too high until NEC comes forth to officially announce the device which is expected to be this Thursday.

BlackBerry Bold 9800 touchscreen phone physical keyboard. Along with the Apple iPhone 4 and the Nokia N8, the Blackberry Bold 9800 Slider is one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year. Providing all we love about Blackberry, and combining it with a sublime touchscreen, it’s a formidable package. How much is it likely to cost though? Join us after the cut to find out…

The new BlackBerry Bold 9800, one of RIM’s next smartphone will be launched in the second half of the year. The BlackBerry Bold 9800, besides being equipped with the new BlackBerry OS 6.0, is characterized by the presence of a touchscreen and a full sliding QWERTY physical keyboard.

Out of all the handsets set to be released this year, the Blackberry Bold 9800 Slider is one of the devices we’re the most excited about. With an excellent QWERTY keypad in place, it’ll be just as good as existing Blackberry models when it comes to email use, yet you’ll also find a large touchscreen display in place.

Everything you need to know about the Blackberry Bold 9800 Slider

As always, it’s likely that you’ll be able to get the Blackberry Bold 9800 Slider for free, with the price of the handset subsidised by a network carrier. However, if you do that, it’s also likely that you’ll be stuck on a 24-month contract – at least initially – paying a hefty premium.

Check out the latest Blackberry deals

If you don’t use the phone that much, it may make better financial sense to buy your Blackberry Bold 9800 Slider on a SIM free package. This will cost you more initially – the Apple iPhone is currently on sale at £499 SIM free, and although the Blackberry Bold 9800 slider is likely to be cheaper it gives a good indication of how expensive these handsets can be.

However, factor that cost over a period of time – such as 24 months – and things start to look a lot cheaper. If you opt for a budget Pay as You Go SIM card, or a cheap contract, it could work out much cheaper than signing a contract – with the added benefit of being able to buy a new phone whenever you want.

How much will you pay for the Blackberry Bold 9800 Slider? Should it be a lot cheaper than the Apple iPhone 4? Leave a comment below and let us know.

The new Samsung Captivate cell phone has a Super AMOLED display, 5-megapixel camera with 720p video. You have the option to pay for AT&T Navigator is you prefer the interface, but Google Nav is free. it doesn’t have at least an LED flash and front facing camera at launch :[ Glad to see more android phones on AT&T.

Top 10 Free Android Apps For Your Mobile Phone. Download Top 10 Free Android Apps for your lovely smartphone. If you’ve got an Android mobile phone such as the Nexus One, here are the all important apps you should take a look at…

My first Android powered mobile phone was the T-Mobile G1. Gosh I loved it. With its love or hate plastic build, easy to use functional QWERTY keyboard and all the social networking tools I could shake a stick at Android powered phones were definitely for me. Moving over from the likes of the iPhone 3GS, I jumped at the opportunity to go with an OS which was to me, for the customisation alone, better.

I now have a HTC Hero running Android 2.1 and love it – HTC Sense is no longer there, but some of the perks do remain. I can also cross use my apps which I love so much, that if they were to self delete themselves, I would cry – because quite simply I need them all. And so after testing out apps, Android powered phones and the whole shebang, I have drawn up a list of the top ten free Android apps you should have.

Therefore, if you’ve got an Android mobile phone such as the Nexus One, here are the all important apps you should take a look at…

1. Twidroid (Twitter)

Twidroid is quite simply the best Android app for Twitter usage. The free edition, which I have used for 4 months, has many of the features you would want from a Twitter app – with the paid version offering even more features, but not necessary ones. If you have an Android powered handset, and use Twitter – whether for personal or business use, then get this app! It is crazily good, and the UI is pleasing to look at.

2. Google Sky Maps (Star Gazing / Astronomy)

Okay. This is admittedly not a practical app. A GPS app. An game app or an app which you would use to solve your lifes little problems, but boy is Google Sky Maps fun to use! For the novelty effect this app has on people you should really try it – people who already have it know what I am talking about, it is the one app which, show it an iPhone user, they will be pretty miffed about. Your mates will love it too. Point your phone at the sky, and it’ll map every single constellation imaginable.

Click here for Google Sky Maps website

3. Note Everything (Note Taking / Organisational)

Note Everything does exactly what is says on the tin! You can pretty much note anything using this app. You can note things in the format of text, paint, voice, checklists and photos. On top of this, shortcuts are very easy to create and you can link them to home, search, send notes, encrypt, reminders and Note Everything even runs with live folders! A must have app for the forgetful type.

Click here to go to a download link for Note Everything

4. Meebo IM (Instant Messaging)

Meebo IM is possibly the best instant messaging integration App. It is compatible with all IM account types – whether they be Google Talk, MSN, AOL, Yahoo or Facebook. Fairly fast yet it can be unreliable, but Meebo IM is great when it does work. In fact, it is an IM necessity.

Click here to for Meebo IM website

5. Advanced Task Killer (Task Manager)

Admittedly Android powered handsets can be a little sluggish sometimes, and sometimes take up to 3 seconds to close an app or web page. That’s because there is so much going on! But, if you are not feeling the love, then you could always download the free edition of Advanced Task Killer. It will display itself as a gadget, and after two clicks will free up your internal memory and rearrange files on your phone a little bit like a defragment! You will definitely see an improvement in performance, and it should reduce the lagginess Android comes with.

Click here for the ATK website

6. AP Mobile (News Aggregator)

Ap Mobile is a news App. And a brilliant one at that. It updates itself regularly, bringing you the latest headlines in every category imaginable – from nature, to technology, to politics, to business > you name it, they’ve got it covered. Free to download, and lots of fact binding up to date articles at your fingertips.

7. Metal Detector (Fun / Novelty)

Yep. It is another un-practical app. But oh how you should try this. I bet you thought that your mobile phone compass was only good for, well, being a compass – right? Wrong! Download the Metal Detector App and you’ll be very surprised by the effectiveness of this app. It works for me through a wooden table top!

8. Chomp SMS (Text Messaging)

Ahh! You are thinking, isn’t that the app with the exact same interface as the iPhones? Well, erm, yeah it is. But that is a good thing! I mean, it is very clean to look at and most of all is free ! I’m really not selling this one am I? Damn it. Okay, just try it – you’ll see it is a great app! Don’t know what it is?
9. Layar (Augmented Reality)

It is a strange app Layar. I use it for fun – as a gimmick, but it could be so much more. Basically, Layar uses your GPS, handset compass and camera to display information on your surroundings in real time. You can hold it in front of you, and see details on landmarks and points of interest, or search for something like ‘toaster’ and all the relevant locations will be up on your display quick time. Nice eh?

10. Phonebook (Contact Manager)

Last but not least comes Phonebook. What list would not be complete without it? It is really good for managing your contacts, the UI is very slick indeed and sthe app syncs your contacts with pictures and contextual information such as birthdays, missed calls and unread text messages. A nice management app which is totally free!

New Apple Mac Mini Update in June 2010. The new Mini’s exterior is comprised of a unibody aluminium shell. HDMI port allowing you to hook the Mini up to your TV. find New Apple Mac Mini Update new features now.

With all of the iPhone 4 news going on, you’d be forgiven for not knowing that the Mac Mini has also seen an overhaul. Unlike previous updates, the New Apple Mac Mini has seen not only a bump in specs, but also a complete redesign.

The new Mini’s exterior is comprised of a unibody aluminium shell, similar in focus to the unibody Macbook Pro. The new design gives the Mini a whole new feel, with the aluminium exterior certainly placing it in the same league as Apple’s more high end aluminium products, such as the iMac and Macbook Pro.

Around the back of the Mini, you’ll find all the ports you ever dreamed of… There are 4 USB 2.0 ports (no USB 3.0 unfortunately, we may have to wait until 2011 until we see Apple incorporate the new standard into their machines) and a Firewire 800 port for peripherals. Also, there’s now an SD card slot at the back, allowing for easy transferring of photos and other SD card content.

A great improvement over the previous model Mini may seem somewhat trivial, in that the power brick is now unnecessary, with all the power circuitry inside the case. If you’ve owned a Mac Mini before, you’ll know that the power brick certainly makes the machine a lot less appealing for those wanting a minimalist setup. For me, the absence of the brick is almost worth the upgrade in itself.

The other big surprise you’ll find at the back of the case is the inclusion of a HDMI port, allowing you to hook the Mini up to your TV, utilising it as a media centre more than a desktop computer. Apple also ship a HDMI – DVI adaptor with the computer, so if you don’t want to use the HDMI port, you can simply use it for a DVI port instead. Naturally, there’s also an Apple Mini Display Port for those of you with an Apple monitor.

The new design and ports that are offered are not only a great upgrade over the previous generation, but could point to something more significant. It’s been quite some time since the Apple TV got an upgrade, and with the Mini gaining a smaller form factor, and media friendly ports such as HDMI, Apple could well drop support for the Apple TV altogether.

However, there is an issue there. The one thing that Apple TV has that the Mini doesn’t is an abundance of audio ports. I use a SPDIF connection for my media centre, to provide full surround sound when watching movies and TV shows. Unless Apple offer this as an add-on to the Mini, I’d find myself reluctant to use it as my media centre.

Of course, design isn’t everything, and with this update, the $499 price tag revealed by Steve Jobs upon the release of the original Mini is long gone. The new update costs $699 in the States, and a ridiculous £649 in the UK (at the time of writing, $699 = £473.05). Until Apple get their international pricing right, there’s no way I’d spend £175 extra for a new computer just because I live in the UK.

The new generation’s specifications have seen an upgrade, but unfortunately only the Core 2 Duo processors are available here, no Core i3 or i5. 2GB RAM comes as standard, and can be upgraded to 8GB via the easily accessible opening at the bottom of the new case. For those looking to play games on the Mini, the NVIDIA 320M GPU makes an appearance, also as standard.

If you have no need for an optical drive, you can choose the Mini Server, priced at £929. This gives you two HDD’s instead of the one, and bumps the RAM up to 4GB for good measure.

Google Android Gingerbread Update Promises Improved User Interface. The original user interface of Android 1.0, it offers a stark contrast to Google’s latest and greatest: Android 2.2 (Froyo) update.

With the constant rate of Android development going on at Google HQ, you’d be forgiven for not realising how many devices are still running the older versions of Android, with Google’s latest figures showing 50% of Android users still using either Android 1.5 or 1.6.

Many manufacturers have chosen to adopt their own user interface over Google’s stock offering, following the example of HTC and their well-received Sense UI. Motorola ship the vast majority of their phones with the ‘Blur’ overlay; HTC have been using Sense UI ever since they started shipping Android and Sony Ericsson ship a custom interface for their Xperia line-up.

Of course, this is the great thing about Android as a platform – after all, it’s open for a reason – but one rarely hears the word ‘fragmentation’ without ‘Android’ tagged alongside it. The custom user interfaces being employed by OEMs aren’t the only cause of this, but it’s certainly a fundamental reason.

Every time Google updates Android (and that’s pretty often), OEMs can’t simply push that update to all of their devices. They have to re-work sections of their user interface to ensure there are no bugs or unseen problems. With major updates, such as Android 2.x, the whole overlay may have to be adjusted and recoded in parts to ensure compatibility. By the time this has been accomplished, Google will have no doubt released a newer version, again leaving many users out in the cold – for example, HTC Desire owners are still waiting to be able to upgrade to Android 2.2.

So how can this be fixed? The Android team over at Google are hard at work on ‘Gingerbread’, the next major version of Android (3.0), and will no doubt want to beat the issue of fragmentation. What’s the best way to do this? A revamp of the Android user interface of course!

The problems in early versions of Android are long gone, with extra functionality added with each update. I’m currently using stock Android 2.2 after rooting my Nexus One, and it comes complete with social network integration, a great looking 3D gallery and a nice user interface. The music player is still in dire need of an upgrade, but that will undoubtedly come sooner rather than later with a future update.

With Google’s recent acquisitions including noticeable start-ups such as 3D desktop application, BumpTop, a lot of people are excited about what’s coming in Gingerbread. Some may argue that this innovation is due to the competition of custom interfaces, but the speed of innovation at Google is far superior to some manufacturers shipping devices with custom interfaces. This is painfully clear, with new devices arriving on the market with an old version of the Android OS. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, for example, is new on the market and ships with Android 1.6!

Although Google won’t restrict manufacturers from applying their own custom interfaces to Android, they can certainly make the UI more appealing. This will make it unattractive for OEMs to skin the interface, as it’ll add to their development costs and they’ll be taking features away from their device, not adding them.

Hopefully, Android ‘Gingerbread’ will mark a significant advance in Google’s efforts to reduce fragmentation, and bring more uniformity to the platform in the future so that they can then try and focus with various manufacturers on competing against the upcoming Apple iPhone 4.

Best Buy to Offer iPhone 4 Pre-Sales June 15. The iPhone 4 doesn’t go on sale until June 24, but starting tomorrow Best Buy will let customers place pre-orders.

Electronics retailer Best Buy has confirmed that it will be offering the Apple iPhone 4 for sale when the device officially launches on June 24, which gives eager customers an option other than standing in line at Apple and AT&T retail outlets. However, it will also be offering pre-sales of the iPhone 4 starting June 15. Historically, Apple hasn’t let third-party retailers get in on the launches of its its mobile devices, but that changed with the iPad, which was also available from Best Buy the same day it went on sale from Apple and AT&T. Apple is apparently now extending that availability to the iPhone 4.

“It’s exciting to have an opportunity to launch this iconic device with this pre-sale,” said Best Buy Mobile president Shawn Score, in a statement. “Adding the iPhone 4 to our stores alongside other great smartphones like the HTC EVO from Sprint and HTC Incredible on Verizon, gives customers a great opportunity to view each side-by-side and get the mobile phone that works best for them.”

Customers placing a pre-sales order for an iPhone 4 at Best Buy are essentially guaranteeing their ability to set hands on an iPhone 4 at launch day, since pre-sales orders will presumably be filled before walk-in orders on launch day. Apple’s mobile devices are historically in short supply after launch; it can still be hard to find an iPad in stock.

Apple retail partners Radio Shack and Wal-Mart will also be offering the iPhone 4 when it launches on June 24.

The iPhone 4 will be running Apple’s iOS 4 with multitasking support. The phone also features two cameras and support for Wi-Fi video chats, noise-canceling microphones, an antenna integrated into the stainless steel case, a high-resolution “retina display” four times the resolution of the current iPhone 3GS, quad-band HSDPA support, the ability to record 720p high-definition video, and more—all in a package 25 percent thinner than the current iPhone. Additional Apple software available includes a version of iBooks and a version of Apple’s iMovie video editing toolkit for iPhone.
